Pollack l'explique sans détour : « Ce qui est documenté ici n'est pas un malheur au hasard. Cela fait partie d'un schéma : une politique gouvernementale qui sépare les familles, appliquée systématiquement, à grande échelle. » Et d'ajouter : « La photo n'est pas seulement émouvante. C'est un document. » Le jury reconnaît que le choix a fait débat en interne, certains redoutant une image de plus de femmes latinas en détresse.
